As of November 1, 2019, long guns may be carried loaded for self-defense and are governed by the Self-Defense Act. You will have to carry long guns in a sling or scabbard. When you transport long guns in a car, you must transport them with an empty chamber in a locked, separate compartment. If you don’t have a lockable separate compartment, you may transport long guns in the cabin of the vehicle, as long as they are in a gun case or on a gun rack.

The biggest difference in the law after November 1, 2019, is that a legally qualified person without a CHL may openly or concealed carry a loaded long gun for self-defense as long as it is in a sling or in a scabbard. A legally qualified person may transport a long gun for self-defense purposes and not be limited to transporting a firearm for hunting, taking the long gun to the range, or taking the long gun in for repairs or sale.
