Fast Facts: Louisiana Passes Permitless Carry

  • SB 1, also known as ACT 1, was signed into law by Governor Jeff Landry and authorizes permitless carry in Louisiana. 
  • The law goes into effect July 4, 2024, and until then, carrying a firearm without a permit is still prohibited. 
  • It’s crucial to understand that permitless carry doesn’t mean unrestricted carry; there are still extensive lists of individuals not authorized to possess firearms under state and federal law. 
  • Louisiana law maintains a significant list of prohibited places where carrying a firearm isn’t allowed, and this new law doesn’t change that. 
  • Maintaining or obtaining a permit in Louisiana holds significant benefits, including reciprocity with other states, exceptions from some federal laws, and the ability to bypass background checks when purchasing firearms.
